HIMSS welcomes the signing of the European Health Data Space regulation, a milestone in advancing digital health that will facilitate the access, use and re-use of health data both within and across European Union borders.
This marks the beginning of a pivotal two-year transition period in which the EU and its Member States will implement transformative initiatives to ensure standardized and interoperable health data can be leveraged to enhance patient care and drive research innovation.
HIMSS looks forward to supporting its members, as well as the nations and regions with whom it collaborates, in preparing to maximize the impact of the EHDS.
"As healthcare enters a new era of digital transformation, the European Health Data Space will be instrumental in enabling seamless and secure data exchange across borders," said Hal Wolf, HIMSS President and CEO. "By fostering interoperability and strengthening data governance, the EHDS will empower healthcare systems to deliver better outcomes while advancing groundbreaking research and innovation."
The EHDS looks to foster a genuine single market for digital health services and products by setting up a governance structure for the use of health data for research, innovation, policy-making and regulatory activities — such as secondary use of data — as well as testing and certification process to ensure that such data are Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable.
Through knowledge-sharing, strategic guidance and industry engagement, HIMSS remains committed to helping stakeholders navigate this transition and unlock the full potential of health data to improve care outcomes across Europe.
